SKIN PROBLEMS / Office Environment and Your Skin

How does an office environment impact your skin?

We often think that working in an office environment that our skin will be safe from harm since we’re not overly exposed to the sun. Have you sometimes noticed or experienced that your skin feels very dry or itchy or even looks a bit red after work? Studies show that working in an office environment can trigger skin problems or skin irritation.

Here are the most common factors that affect your skin and tips on how to protect your skin:

  • Air conditioning or Heating system

Air conditioners and heating systems tend to dry out the air. This is one of the main causes of dry skin and even skin irritation. That’s why it’s a good practice to keep an extra moisturiser or lotion on your desk to help moisturise your skin whenever it feels dry.

  • Computer monitors or screen

We all know that computer screens cause vision problems. However, research also shows that they can cause allergies and skin irritation. Computer screens form electrostatic field which attracts dust around it thus triggering allergies or skin irritation. So if you have underlying skin conditions like rosacea or eczema working long hours in an office can trigger a breakout. Protect yourself from your computer screen by having at least 2 feet distance between you and the screen. Remember to regularly clean your screen and computer as well.

  • Hydration

Sometimes we forget to drink enough water especially if we have a busy schedule.Hydrating doesn’t only keep you healthy but it could also prevent your skin to dry out. Make sure to bring a bottle of water with you when you work.

  • Lighting

Ultraviolet rays or UV rays are not only produced by the sun, artificial lightings like fluorescent bulbs also produce UV rays. Even if you work in an office, make sure to protect your skin by applying sunscreen or moisturisers with SPF.

  • Food

When you’re busy at work we tend to forget or skip meals and we end up getting quick snacks that are not healthy. Sometimes this is unavoidable. If you foresee that your schedule is going to be very busy, make a healthy pack lunch rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants which boosts a younger looking skin.
