What Causes blackheads?
Blackheads are dark/ black tiny bumps that you see on your skin. These small bumps develop because of clogged pores or hair follicles. Each pore contains a hair and sebaceous gland. The sebaceous gland is responsible for producing oil called sebum that helps lubricate our hair and skin thus making it smooth. Once dry skin cells and the oil accumulate, the pores get blocked and small bumps on the skin are produced. And when the surface of the skin opens, this allows the air to enter; this causes the bump to look black. If the skin surface remains closed, these tiny bumps become whiteheads.
Causes of blackheads
Most blackheads, whiteheads and acne appear during the puberty stage. Why, because during this stage, hormonal changes can cause overproduction of oil in our skin, thus producing blackheads and acne. For women, when it’s the time of the month don’t be alarmed if you see an increase of blackheads on your skin.
- There are specific medications that can cause skin problems like blackheads and acne. Medications like birth control pills, corticosteroids or androgens are the most common example of drugs that can have a direct effect on our skin.
As mentioned above, blackheads develop because of clogged pores. Wearing too much make-up can increase the chance of blackheads to develop especially when you sleep with your make-up on.
Since excess oil is one of the culprits for blackheads, too much sweating can contribute to this skin problem. Also, if you are wearing make-up during a hot day, this can also cause your pores to clog.
If you’re experiencing a large number of blackheads, whiteheads or acne, it’s highly recommended to seek advice from a dermatologist.
